When most people envision what Christmas and the holidays looks like, they think of snow-covered towns, sledding down hills, hot cocoa and bundling up by the fire.
Fireworks over Downtown
Floridians have a slightly different picture of Christmas. We think of sunny skies and 70-degree weather, enjoying holiday meals on back porch patios with family and friends, going to the beach on Christmas afternoon, and sitting on a dock by the lake for the firework shows on New Year ’s Eve.
Central Florida is not your typical holiday experience, but for those who do spend their holiday season here, it is one of the most pleasant and unique places you can be. These are some of my favorite Christmas time things to do in Central Florida:
Ice Skating at Winter in the Park, Winter Park, FL- Just off of Park Avenue, the holiday ice skating rink in Central Park is a great spot to bring the kids! Opening at 3:00 PM Monday through Saturday and noon on Sunday, ice-skating at Winter in the Park is the perfect afternoon or evening activity with the kids during the holiday season.
Dayo Scuba from Winter Park Florida Having Some Fun Diving the Springs
Springs Diving- Diving the springs is a great wintertime option to enjoy the water. With a constant water temperature of 72-degrees, diving the springs allows you year round watersports opportunities and a great way to spend a warm December afternoon. Devil’s Den is one of our favorite spots to go, but the options are vast.
ICE! at the Gaylord Palms Resort- Who says Florida doesn’t have any snow? The Gaylord Palms Resort opens its doors every December for ICE!, a themed winter wonderland including incredible and elaborate ice sculptures, parkas, ice slides and of course, snow!
Football - Floridians know that football and Christmas time go hand in hand. For the first two weekends in December, the Florida Citrus Bowl hosts FHSAA Florida High School Football State Championships on Friday and Saturday. Fan bases from all around the state come to cheer on the future stars of college football as they compete for the ultimate Florida football prize. As for college football, Orlando is home to two of the best bowl games in the country, the Russell Athletic Bowl and the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl. These games always draw elite matchups and the fanfare throughout Orlando leading up to the bowl games is world class.
Fishing- As the weather cools down in Florida, the fish school up. Fishing during the holiday season is one of my favorite things to do. Inshore, redfish start to school up in large numbers on the flats and less rain and clear water offers great sight fishing opportunities. Offshore, Sailfish season is on and nothing beats the thrill of bringing in a billfish. Bass fishing in Central Florida is also excellent this time of the year as hungry fish prepare for winter.
Light Up UCF - Located outside the CFE Arena on the UCF Campus, Light Up UCF offers a holiday themed village complete with ice-skating, rides, light shows and even snow every evening. A great place to bring kids, Light Up UCF really does have the holiday fun that everyone can enjoy.

Biplanes - Looking for a Christmas present for that special someone that they would not expect? Biplane rides offer a great opportunity for a unique gift and will be an experience that you will not be forgotten. Offered throughout Central Florida, Biplane rides really are a great way to see Central Florida.
Going to the Beach - The best part about Christmas in Florida that is going to the beach is a year round option. While the water may be too cold for some, the sunshine and beautiful temperatures are a great way to spend time with loved ones during the holidays.
Our holiday traditions are probably not the most typical but we love them. Central Florida offers unique holiday opportunities you cannot find anywhere else. When thinking of your next holiday getaway, Get Local is happy to help you make your experience special.
